Smart Family Fire Safety Plan by Arpel Security Systems

House fires happen all the time. Although no one ever thinks it will be their house that burns, it is always best, for the safety of your family, to be prepared for the worst and to actively prevent the worst from happening. You can take steps to prevent a disastrous house fire from happening in your home and help keep your family safe with a smart fire safety plan.

Start Your Plan with Preparation

Always be prepared for the worst. No matter how many preventative measures you take, accidents can happen and unforeseen, unpreventable incidents can still occur. To be sure your family is prepared to act safely in the event of a fire, implement a fire safety plan and practice it with your whole family. Your plan should include:

  • Who will be responsible for whom? Be sure you know which adults will be responsible for which children in the event of a fire.
  • Plan escape routes. During a fire, normal entrances and exits could be blocked. Be sure rooms on upper floors have window ladders and practice evacuating your house through different exits.
  • Teach children to get low and then go. Crouching while they exit the home will help reduce smoke inhalation.
  • Establish a safe meeting place. Determine a safe place (a neighbor’s yard or the mailbox) where all members of your family should meet once successfully evacuated.

Create Safe Spaces to Prevent Avoidable House Fires

You should install smoke and fire alarms in every area and story of your home and at least one near each sleeping space. In addition, keep fire extinguishers handy near sources of heat in your home, like the fireplace and oven.

In the Kitchen
  • Maintain your appliances. Keep them clean. If they aren’t working right, replace them or have them repaired.
  • Never leave the kitchen unattended while you are cooking. Fires can start and grow uncontrollably in a matter of minutes.
  • Do not keep any loose items (pot holders, towels or cookbooks) near the oven.
  • Be wary of leaks in the dishwasher, which can lead to electrical fires.
In the Living Room
  • Do not overload extension cords or power strips.
  • Do not run extensions cords through high-traffic areas or under furniture.
  • Extension cords are only rated safe up to a certain wattage and shouldn’t be paired with high-energy appliances, like space heaters.
  • Have your vents and chimneys regularly cleaned.
  • Be extremely cautious with candles. Never leave them unattended. Never light them near fuel sources such as a combustible, curtains or furniture.
