Camera fitted outside the house

Whether you own a local restaurant or operate an office of 100 staff, having CCTV systems is one of the best ways to heighten the security of your business. Just the sight of CCTV cameras on your property is often enough to scare off would-be burglars, thieves, and other trouble makers. Most CCTV systems also offer video recording and remote monitoring capabilities so that you can quickly respond to emergencies – and they’re not as expensive or complicated as you think!

While CCTV systems make it easier to protect your business, sometimes it is difficult to avoid blind spots or get the best footage. We’ve compiled our key tips on how to avoid blind spots to better protect every inch of your property.

6 Tips to Ensure Optimal Coverage with Your CCTV System

A blind spot refers to an area that isn’t in the peripheral vision of the CCTV camera. Since all cameras have limited range, every security camera will have a blind spot. In order to cover as much ground as possible, each camera’s view must overlap with the blind spot of the camera located closest to it.

Whether your CCTV camera is indoors or outdoors, it’s important to situate each camera to avoid any blind spots. Ensure optimal coverage with these tips:

1 – Review the Building Plan for Ideal Locations

Review the building plan and mark the ideal locations for CCTV camera placement. Consider the size of each area and the detection range of your camera and then decide how much zoom you need. Feel free to consult with Arpel security experts to determine a custom CCTV system that will work best for your floor plan.

2 – Take Photos to Understand Field of View

Take photos of the areas that you want to cover from the proposed camera locations at your business. This will give you an idea of each camera’s field of view (FOV) to help determine what lens you need, how far away to place the camera and how wide the viewing area is. A bonus tip is to put your camera into action with trial runs and have someone pose as a visitor or intruder to approach your property from various angles.

3 – Determine What You Want to Capture

What are you trying to capture with each individual camera? Is it to capture a suspicious person’s face or to get a clear image of a car license plate? Answering these questions will help you determine the camera resolution and type of CCTV camera you require for your business.

4 – Evaluate the Potential for Vandalism

Depending on your business, your CCTV system may be susceptible to tampering and damage by an intruder blocking the camera to obstruct its view. If your CCTV camera is easily accessible by intruders, then vandal-proof security cameras are a great option – and most have the added benefit of being weatherproof!

5 – Consider the Lighting of the Area

A consideration that is often forgotten is how brightly lit the area is. If space is dimly lit, or the lights will be turned off at night, then you may require additional lighting or infrared CCTV cameras to ensure that the footage isn’t too dark.

6 – Don’t Forget Nature’s Intrusions

For outdoor CCTV systems, natural forces such as movement from wind and trees may hinder the effectiveness of your security cameras. Pay attention to camera angles and placement in regards to nature, such as sunlight and leafy branches that could obscure the camera’s vision and help intruders take advantage of your blind spots. Your camera should also be durable enough to withstand humidity, harsh temperatures, sand, dust and any outdoor conditions that can affect the quality of your footage. Make it a point to monitor these external factors at least each season, if not monthly.
